Abstract This article discusses the social, psychological, and cultural effects generated by the acute lack of food experienced by the Roma deported to Transnistria during the Holocaust. The analysis, based on survivor testimonies, is guided by two theoretical models: Dirks’ general cross-cultural pattern and Young’s specific model applied to Jewish inmates in Nazi camps.
